How I do love the esoterica of bike rack usage. Click image for discussion of proper and intended use of these hump racks, if you are truely at a loss for anything better to do at the moment.

As I remember it, back when U-locks started getting popular, thieves learned to break them by putting a pipe over the part that stuck out (on the crossbar) and snapping it off. So, everyone went to the hardware store and got one of these pipe T-fittings and used it like this.

It's convenient to lock both wheels and the frame with one solid cable and a good lock. This American padlock is very good, but the thief cut through the half-inch cable cleanly.

There is a pattern here that has been repeated several times. As soon as a new bike appears on the rack, if it's not locked properly, it will be stolen within a couple of days, or whatever part isn't locked properly will be stolen.

What could I do about that?

I like the lines of this machine. A car ran over its back wheel an it was left locked to the planter for the last five years. Workers renovating the playground cut the lock. All the parts are too rusted together to use.
